Behavioural

Behavioural problems can occur at any point in your canine companions’ life and they are challenging and confusing to you as an owner.  We tend to be quick to label our dogs as disobedient, dominant, out of control, or aggressive.  But are they?

Behaviour whether good or bad is our dogs’ way of communicating with us and we should remember this.  So what are they trying to communicate to us? Are they physically, mentally, emotionally distressed, ill and/or in pain, not sure about what we are asking of them? After all they don’t speak English and our commands and body language may be confusing.  Are they looking for stability in a new environment, is there a new addition to the household, human or animal, have we altered our working pattern, are we ill?

If your canine companions’ behaviour changes you should always seek a veterinary consultation to rule out any underlying health problems first, before seeking advice on undertaking any form of retraining.  If it is a health issue causing the problem then it will not be solved by retraining.

Behavioural problems have underlying causes and you cannot work on solving the problem just using retraining.

It is important to remember that there are no quick fixes when it comes to a behavioural challenge. Time, consistency and patience are needed, and there are no guarantees that a cure can be made, but if the problem cannot be cured, you will feel informed about how you can best manage the situation.
